Hague

Hague Another town created by the coming of a railroad line in 1883, it got its name from its first postmaster, Archelaus Hague.  Hague became a railroad town in the 1800's. There was a post office, community school, sawmill, commissary, and cotton mills. The very small community stands as a reminder of the old shipping railroad towns that dotted the state of Florida in the 1800's. Timber usage and the boll weevil desimated the early industries. The old railroad station site can still be found with the water tank. The old School House-Methodist Church was built in 1880 and was restored in 1982. The building has the original wide board, tongue and groovve flooring, benches and pulpit. The resumed regular services in 1983.Florida Southern Railroad was built in July 1883. Train Travel began between Gainesville & Hague on September 8th, 1883.Passengers traveling 1st Class paid 50 Cents & 2nd Class paid 40 Cents.

Hague School 1880

Hague Methodist Church

It was built in the 1880s when William Drayton Evins, a captain who served in the Confederate States Army, moved his family to Evinston from South Carolina to start a new life. It took two years and $2,000 to build.

Hague is located 11 Miles north of Gainesville, along Federal Highway 441. Hague was once one of the best farming communities in North Central Florida. It was the largest shipping points of vegetables grown in Alachua County. Cattle farming was also popular in the Township of Hague. Since the 1880’s, large families of the: Hagues, Cellons, Dampiers & Standleys operated large acreage farms in Hague.
