Few folks know that Florida State University had a football team well before the school became coeducational (again) in 1947. Prior to its reconstitution as the Florida State College for Women under the Buckman Act in 1905, the West Florida Seminary was coeducational and football was a school sport. This photo of the school’s football team was taken in 1899. The team members are sitting on the steps of College Hall, the seminary’s main building, which stood from its construction in 1891 to 1909, when it was replaced by Westcott Hall, which still stands today.

Under the leadership of University of Florida President Albert A. Murphree, Albert J. Farrah was recruited to serve as dean for the UF College of Law, which opened for classes Sept. 29, 1909. The college was housed in Thomas Hall Dormitory (pictured above) with two full-time faculty members, including Farrah and Harry R. Trusler, (formerly a professor at Stetson). Part-time faculty in the college included: Dr. Enoch M. Banks, A.M., Ph.D, who taught courses in constitutional and international law; Judge Horatio Davis, who lectured in Florida pleading and practice; Col. W. W. Hampton, who gave a course in legal ethics; and Judge Thomas M. Shackleford of the Florida Supreme Court served as a special lecturer.
Buckman Hall was completed in 1906, and is currently used as a residence hall. It was named for state representative Henry Holland Buckman, the principal author of the Buckman Act, which consolidated Florida's public institutions of higher education in 1905
