They worshipped by night, so not to be found out, to escape persecution, many French Huguenots then emigrated to England and stayed there, some others left England for the US. The Fugate line emigrated to England and stayed there, some others later left England for America. For safety from France, they change the name to Fugate.

The Fugate family is reputed to be of French Huguenot extraction in the "Chronicles of New England Settlers", this would support Peter being from France through England, and the time frame is when many French Huguenots came to America. His 100-Acres tract, called The French Plantation, in honor of his roots. Fugate`s land at Cathole Creek was doubled, in late December of 1685 with the addition of another tract which was bordered by Swan Creek. Peter La Foucate was brought to Maryland as an indenture as an eleven year old child. His family was a French Huguenot reputedly from Normandy, family tradition holds that they came originally from Alsace, a story compatible with the known history of the Huguenots.

They settled near Hazard, Kentucky, in around 1820, were both carriers of the recessive methemoglobinemia (met-H) gene. As a result, four of their nine children exhibited blue skin. Their continued reproduction within the limited local gene pool along with a lack of transportation infrastructure ensured that many descendants of the Fugates were born with met-H.

In a deposition in 1808 he moved to Russell Co., VA in 1772. They had 12 children., Robert, Samuel, Homer, John, Lydia, Isaac, Mattie and Hannah Tate. Tate Fort was built on the lands of Colonel John Tate who had settled on Moccasin Creek in the year 1772, on a tract of 174 acres of land surveyed for him December 13, 1774 Tate's Fort was a stockaded affair certainly cannot be doubted, for 15 or 20 families could never have crowded into a fort house. It certainly must have been manned and defended by its occupants for I find no record of militia ever having been stationed there). Hannah was born in and married Colbert Fugate. Buried on Fugate farm cemetery in 1819 Moccasin Creek, Russell County, Virginia. M:2) 1790 Katerine Porter B: 05/09/1768 VA D: 09/07/1853.

Served as Magistrate of Russell Co., VA and was a surveyor and engineer. Built a beautiful brick home in Russell Co. prior to the Civil War which is still standing not far from Grassy Creek in Russell Co. Nearby he built a brick church which he called "Esther's Chapel" in honor of his wife. This chapel has long since been torn down. During his life he owned many slaves, and kept their births or dates of purchases on papers inserted in the family Bible.

William Ross, entered service from Guilford Co NC c 1777/79, in NC unit; died 8/30/1825 Wythe Co VA; married by Reverend William Marshall; (their children: Kissia, Reuben, Randolph, Mary, Charity, William, Rachel, Clarissa, Elizabeth, Ann, Uphemia, Cenia, and Catherine). Ross acquired land in the Poplar Camp area in 1782 (200 acres on treasury warrant) and 1783, when he was about 31 or 32. In 1787 he was appointed overseer on the road from Herbert's Ferry to James Cocks. In 1789, he purchased 130 acres from William Herbert. William Ross began industrial activity in the area about 1790, and owned a grist mill there. More than 700 acres in the area and in Mack Creek were surveyed for Ross in the 1790s. He sold, in 1797, the tracts connected with the Poplar Camp furnace, and apparently moved to Persimmon Bottom near Macks Run on the New River (presently Pulaski Co.), where he purchased tracts totalling 280 acres from John and Mary Hurst. Williams log house on the New River still stands, and may have been a country inn with rooms for rent, apparently called the County Inn, in Draper, Pulaski Co. VA, at Mile 91 on U.S. Interstate 81.

Martin Fugate & Elizabeth Smith
The Blue Kentucky Clan
Fugate family illustrating the inheritance of a deficiencyin methemoglobin
The Blue People of Kentucky were an isolated enclave of Appalachian people who lived with an embarrassing skin discoloration until a young hematologist took notice and found a solution. As the story goes, Martin Fugate, a French orphan, settled on the banks of eastern Kentucky's Troublesome Creek around 1820 to claim a land grant. He married a red-haired American named Elizabeth Smith with a very pale complexion. Little did they know that their union would create shades of blue people!Generations later, a descendant of Martin Fugate, Benjy Stacy, would be born "blue". '"He was almost purple,"' his father, Alva Stacy, recalls." Benjy was born in a maternity ward near Hazard, Kentucky and was rushed by ambulance to a medical clinic in Lexington to find help for his blue problem. Days of testing provided no answers; but then Benjy's grandmother told the doctor a story about the "blue" Fugates. Incredibly, Benjy had inherited a gene dating back over 162 years! Thankfully, Benjy lost his blue shade after a few weeks and the only lingering effects were blue fingernails and lips when he was cold or angry. In the early 1960's, this blue malady caught the attention of Madison Cawein, an inquisitive hematologist from the University of Kentucky. Curiosity drove him to Hazard where he was introduced to a nurse, Ruth Pendergrass, who had met a "dark blue" woman. She was one of the "blue" Combses who lived up on Ball Creek and was a sister to one of the Fugate women; her brother, Luke, was also blue. The search for blue people ensued. Patrick and Rachel Ritchie, who lived in Hardburly, were also blue. Cawein eventually found a small population of people in the back woods of Appalachia, many with a blue skin disorder. The afflicted were embarrassed about their condition and adamant about talking to Cawein. Eventually, Cawein gained their trust and began taking blood samples. Tests for abnormal hemoglobin were negative. Then he began to construct the family genealogy and traced their roots back to Martin and Elizabeth Fugate. Fortunately, Cawein was able to find an antidote for the blood disorder - methylene blue which acted as an electron donor. The antidote worked quickly but patients were required to take daily doses as it passed quickly through the urine. At last they were free of their "blue" shade and were no longer embarrassed. Cawein, in researching the family lines in Perry County, Kentucky and with the help of Fugate Family Bibles, found in fact, that the Fugates had married Fugates, had married first cousins, and had intermarried with families whose surnames were: Combs, Smith, Ritchie, and Stacy. They lived in isolation and married the girl next door, even if they had the same last name, and consequently passed the gene on to many generations. Martin and Elizabeth had seven children, four being born blue; Zachariah, who was blue, married his mother's sister. Written family records do not indicate Martin's skin color, but family legend says he was blue. Eventually, the recessive gene began to disappear once coal mining and the railroad opened the community to outsiders. This small enclave was no longer isolated and they began to disperse and marry outside of their little clan diminishing the effect of the "blue" gene. In online research, there was no mention made of "blue" people as recorded in the genealogy book, The Fugate Family of Russell County Virginia, published in 1986, but it has been confirmed in the Fugate discussions on the Genforum. It is almost certain that Martin was a descendant of the Fugate family of Russell County, Virginia and probably of French origin. It is documented that Fugates were born in the colonies in the mid 1600's but the original progenitor has not been confirmed. Different spellings of the surname sometimes include "Fugett" and "Fugitt". Mary (Dawley) Fugate, who answers quite a few queries and also helped compile the genealogy book, indicates that the siblings of Martin Fugate were not blue but he must have been a carrier. She also states that the union of Martin and Elizabeth were probably not the originators of the gene as their marriage took place too late. There was a Zachariah Fugate who was married to a Mary Smith; both carried the gene which resulted in blue children. Mary Fugate said that the gene is very dominant in the Smith line but there is still no concrete answers as to what couple started the shades of blue people.

Cathy Trost says of the Fugate clan of East KY, aided by some good old-fashioned inbreeding, had it bad. “They’re known simply as the 'blue people' in the hills and hollows around Troublesome and Ball Creeks. Most lived to their 80s and 90s without serious illness associated with the skin discoloration. For some, though, there was a pain not seen in lab tests. That was the pain of being blue in a world that is mostly shades of white to black.”
