A lodge of this order was organized at Johnsonsburg on the 15th of August, 1869, under the name of Tonawanda Division, No. 4, S. of Т., by Mr. Boughton, of New York. The first officers were: Horace Thayer, W. P.; Augusta Rudd, W. A.; J. E. Lewis, R. S.; Mrs. L. H. Jones, A. R. S.; E. J. Johnson, F. S.; George A. Blair, treasurer; James Tilton, conductor;. Jennie Dunham, A. C.; Alfreda Patterson, I. S.; Willie Lewis, O. S.; Alonzo Dunham, chaplain; A. Dunham, P. W. P.; George W. Blair, deputy G. W. P. This organization maintained an existence until February, 1873, when it was disbanded and the Good Templars lodge formed. The Sons of Temperance was a brotherhood of men who promoted the temperance movement and mutual support. The group was founded in 1842 in New York City. It began spreading rapidly during the 1840s throughout the United States and parts of Canada. The organization had a highly restricted membership. In order to become a member (called a “brother“), a man had to be nominated by an existing brother. Three other brothers would then investigate his life to determine if they thought he was worthy of membership. The Sons of Temperance required a two-dollar initiation fee, an amount equal to a week’s wages of an ordinary worker. In addition, the weekly membership fee was six cents. It had secret rituals, signs, passwords, hand grips and regalia.

B: 01/18/1855 Attica, Genesee, NY. Mr. Dunham is one of the pioneer settlers of North Dakota, and has been identified with the farm interests of Eddy county since taking up his residence there, and is now the fortunate possessor of sixteen hundred acres of land, and is successfully conducting diversified farming thereon. He is a man of honest purpose and true citizenship, and is highly esteemed throughout that locality where he is well known and has been associated with the people in various important public offices. in 1883 went to North Dakota and entered claim to government land in Eddy county, upon which he erected a claim shanty 16x16 feet. He had a limited start, and had only sod barns, and for the first two years farmed with oxen. His crops were fair but cut too soon, and his wheat shrunk and was almost worthless, but his crop of oats was good. He was elected country treasurer on the Republican ticket in 1892, and the following year removed to New Rockford, and was re-elected in 1894, and in 1896 was elected county auditor, making his public service as a county officer extend over a period of six years. He also conducted his farm while in the city, and in the spring of 1899 returned to the same to reside. He has about one thousand acres of his land under cultivation and has all necessary machinery, and a complete set of good farm buildings, and six acres of cottonwood trees, plenty of good water, and a finely developed farm in every particular, and is known as one of the substantial farmers of the community.

Valley Falls, Kansas

Loretta Pearl Hooker Spore-Brewer, born in Valley Falls, was originally called Grasshopper Falls, from the falls in the Grasshopper River (now known as the Delaware River). The first settlement was made there in 1854, and the town was platted in 1855. Just after the opening of Kansas territory in 1854, frontier entrepreneurs found a falls on the Grasshopper River that they believed would serve well in powering a mill. Mills would be replaced by elevators and for a century, grinding agricultural produce and serving the farm community was the main commerce. Grasshopper Falls would be platted in 1855 and incorporated in 1869. The grasshopper invasion of the 1870s was devastating and not a good promotional tool for a new and aspiring town. Aided by Legislature, the name of the river was changed to the Delaware (an American Native tribe most dominant in the region) and the twice more named town, eventually became Valley Falls. Many of the town's streets were named after women pioneer settlers.

Orangeville, Wyoming County, New York

In regard to New York's claim, as of 1683 the present Wyoming County was part of Albany County of the Province of New York. This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. This county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766, by the creation of Cumberland County, and further on March 16, 1770, by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now in the state of Vermont. New York's claims were not recognized until the Treaty of Hartford was ratified in 1786 and were not actively asserted until the Holland Purchase.

First Congregational Church: This church was constituted August 14th, 1847, under the direction of Rev. W. C. Childs. In October, 1874, a reorganization of this church was effected, under the direction of Rev. J. C. Caswell, with six-teen members. The church building was repaired and re-fitted at an expense of $700, and was afterward supplied with a bell, an organ and commodious sheds. Mr. Caswell remained as pastor until the spring of 1878, and was succeeded the same year by the present pastor, Rev. D. Dunham.
